The night began like most any other new drain scoutings, parking our vehicles in a public lot,  donning our warm gloves, toques (yes Ds, NOT Beanies) and thigh-high hip waders affectionately called 'ubers'. Being uncertain as to the exact location of the outfall, we had parked what was later determined to be a signifigant distance from our goal. The Drain itself was not particularly noteworthy, a 2100 RCP shrinker that ran gun-barrel straight for over a kilometer. About 400m in we discovered the former outfall location, complete with grate moorings.

Some time ago, the length of the drain was extended to accommodate the new suburb that is built above.  Shortly after reaching this obsolete outfall, the walls start to close in in gradual steps, until it becomes an ordeal to continue.  turning back after the drain hit 900mm in diameter, and taking advantage of the ability to stand upright, the slight light at the end of the 600mm branch (seen above) piqued the curiousity of one of us.

Scraping palms and knees, and clambering over gravel and other detritus, we reached a manhole chamber that raised eyebrows even among us experienced drainers. The walls were vivid and lashed out with color, starkly contrasting the hundreds of meters of dull ash grey concrete we have tjust recently traversed. Before the drain was extended, this tiny little alcove in the world was transformed into a sanctuary of sorts. Shelving limned the corners, stuck fast with high powered caulking adhesive. The floor was raised and permitted invulnerability to nuisance flow and a comfy place to sit. The wallls were artistically painted and it was obvious someone spent a great deal of time making this "thier place".. Sadly, after the drain was extended, it appears this space was forgotten. To the person that made the underworld just a little brighter, I salute you.
